When designing these staircases Sherburne wanted to challenge the user to consider more than just the action of climbing and descending. Other than Staircase 1, these staircase designs evolve from conceptual concerns that use the inherent actions and ramifications associated with engaging with stairs. The goal was to take the banal and utilitarian and use its inherent qualities to further engage its users interest.
