In designing these door handle concepts, Sherburne first looked at the typical neutrality and utilitarian nature of a door handle. Door handles are required to serve a simple task and rarely venture outside the parameters of functionality. He wanted to challenge that notion and alternately manipulate the functionality to a degree that the user was forced to consider the not only the use of a door handle but their expectations of the very process of opening a door.
