The Light Box
The “Light Box” is similar to the “Ember Lamp” as it looks at the application of materials in a manner that will challenge the end object participant’s expectations of that material. With this end table, Sherburne was exploring the use of wood veneer and how it will behave when backlit. The concept for these boxes is that they would be used as end tables either beside a couch or in a bedroom. When the light is off they function as up-market end tables that use walnut veneer to give a rich warm aesthetic. When the light inside is on they change to become ambient lighting objects offering a sensual warm glow through the veneer. This challenges the nature of what is usually expected from a wood product being solid and heavy and instead presents an ephemeral object that appears light weight. The translucence is unexpected to the first time viewer and challenges their notions of what is to be expected from the object. In turn this heightens the engagement with the object and keeps it in memory
